I can speak from first hand experience that there is a very real problem with extraction of oil from raw algae. The yields tend to be very low, and a fairly large quantity of raw algae is required to get even a usable amount of oil. At the present, I'm able to recover about 1 gram of oil from 20 grams of dried algae. Even once the oil is recovered, it must be "upgraded" by cooking it under high temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst. While the use of algae oil as a fuel source does hold some promise, it has a long way to go before it's practical....Show more
